We are honored to name the jazz society after Oshkosh native Mike Melvoin, jazz pianist, composer, bandleader and arranger. He was Chairman and President of the Recording Academy, served as the head of NARAS as well as being nominated 2003 Grammy Award for the Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.
Erin Boheme, member of the Jazz Committee , Concord Label artist and Oshkosh native, was instrumental in naming the jazz society after Mike Melvoin.
The purpose of the jazz society is to increase awareness and appreciation for jazz this significant part of our heritage, through performances from jazz masters, publications and promotion. And to really depict the beginning and history of Jazz.
Our plan is to have a space within the center/museum for the Mike Melvoin Jazz Society. We will showcase past and present jazz performers from Oshkosh and surrounding areas who has had national and international acclaim and who currently are performing and introducing jazz in the Fox Valley and surrounding areas.
Events are as follows:
Workshops, Jazz Appreciation Month, Monthly jam sessions, City wide jazz concert series, an Annual Jazz Gala (fundraiser) and an Annual one day Jazz Festival/Jazz walk. (Oshkosh Jazz Festival Meets the Arts)
The society will affiliate and collaborate with worldwide jazz societies.
Members of the jazz society will receive a bi-monthly newsletter.
